I must admit, I got into the podcast bandwagon pretty late. In fact, my getting hooked on them was purely by accident. It all started with Jenna Lyons. As the self-proclaimed co-president of the Jenna Lyons Fans Club: Philippines Chapter ( I share position this with Anne Bella-Arguelles and Bianca Santiago-Reinoso), I’m always interested in reading interviews or articles about her. Aside from her impeccable style both in terms of fashion and interiors, I’ve always admired her work ethic, honesty and humbleness. Whenever I finish reading, I come away with little tidbits of inspiration and knowledge that I tuck into my little data bank (the tiny bit of my brain that has been unaffected by epidurals, lol) for future use. So when I stumbled upon Christine Barberich’s podcast featuring Jenna, I immediately tuned in and that was it, a podcast fanatic was born.
I suppose the one good thing about Manila traffic is that you get to spend insane amounts of time in transit which gives you just enough time to listen to an episode to two. Which is exactly when I listen to them. So if you find yourself stuck in between meetings, school pick-ups or errands, you might want to listen to some of my favorites and hopefully come out of it a little bit more inspired to take on the day ahead, week or even month ahead.
1.UnStyled by Refinery29 hosted by Christine Barberich
The podcast that started it all for me. UnStyled is a podcast featuring amazing people and their funny and sometimes heartbreaking yet always inspiring stories and memories through the clothes that they wear.
Favorite episode: Jenna Lyons and her career trajectory at J.Crew, what she learned from working her way up and how to move on when things don’t exactly go as planned.
2. Second Life by My Domaine hosted by Hillary Kerr
I have been a fan of Who What Wear founders Katherine Power and Hilary Kerr since they first launched their website back in 2006. I was a buyer for a clothing brand then and would immediately go straight to Who What Wear for fashion inspiration and insider knowledge when it came to upcoming trends and forecasts. Fast forward 12 years later, the duo have built such an amazing lifestyle empire that houses most of my go-to sites whether it be interiors, entertaining, money matters etc. When I found out that they branched out into podcasts featuring women who’ve reinvented themselves over and over again and still believe in learning and improving some more I knew I had to give it a listen.
I have way too many favorites. Listen to ALL of them!
3. Girlboss Radio hosted by Sophia Amoruso
You’ve read her books, you’ve watched her show (Girlboss on Netflix), and you can’t think of a more badass boss leader than Sophia Amoruso. What I love most about this podcast is that she focuses on the hustle involved in making a name for yourself. Successful people don’t get to where they are by not working hard and each episode of Girlboss Radio delves into that.
Favorite episodes: Aimee Song, Emily Weiss, Grace Bonney
4. Raw Milk hosted by Beth Kirby
I just started listening to this and have only caught one episode but my goodness what a treasure trove that episode was. I’m currently at a crossroads with myself career wise and I don’t quite know what to do. I feel like I want to do so much and at the same time doubting my abilities to do so. Athena Calderone’s episode could not come at a better time. I highly recommend that you listen to it especially if you’re trying to find our way career wise.
